"The psychology of success involves a number of factors: (1) Distinguishing success from failure; (2) Setting goals for success; (3) Avoiding behaviours related to the psychology of failure (which include being lazy, greedy, ambitious, selfish, ignorant and vain); (4) Working on your beliefs about success and failure; and so on". Jim Byrne, October 2005.
|
Like all professional counsellors and psychotherapists, I have a specific set of accreditations/registrations with professional bodies, and I follow a particular set of ethical codes. For information on my Accreditations and Ethical Codes please click this link.

"The psychology of happiness indicates that material assets are not prime factors in promoting happiness, once subsistence level has been reached. The more important factors include: (1) Being involved in engrossing activities that are meaningful for you; (2) Having at least one major relationship involving trust and intimacy; (3) Working intelligently towards your own goals; and so on". Jim Byrne, November 2005.

QUOTES OF THE WEEK
Albert Ellis
"So by all means set up your own goals and purposes and heed the rules of the community in which you choose to live. Doing so will usually get you favourable results and is therefore (because of your goals) 'good' or 'valuable'. But if you really want to be self-helping, wise, and 'rational', decide that you will *only* rate your acts, deeds, thoughts, feelings, and other behaviours and that you will not - yes, *not* - rate your *self*, your *being*, your *essence*, your *totality* at all. Yes preferably not at all, though this may be somewhat unrealistic because you and the rest of us humans seem to have a biological tendency to rate both our behaviours and our 'self'."
Albert Ellis PhD, *Reason and Emotion in Psychotherapy*, New York: Carol Publishing; 1994, page 191.
...
Abd Er-Rahman III of Spain:
“I have now reigned about 50 years in victory or peace, beloved by my subjects, dreaded by my enemies, and respected by my allies. Riches and honors, power and pleasure, have waited on my call, nor does any earthly blessing appear to have been wanting to my felicity. In this situation, I have diligently numbered the days of pure and genuine happiness which have fallen to my lot. They amount to fourteen”.

Over the past seven years I have helped more than 350 individuals, including many couples, to overcome their emotional, behavioural and relationship problems; and to become much happier than they had ever been before. To see some testimonials from satisfied customers, please take a look at the Client Testimonials page.
If you are looking for help with an emotional, behavioural or relationship problem, but you do not live within commuting distance of Hebden Bridge or Halifax, West Yorkshire, then please take a look at the Online (including Telephone) Coaching page.
"The psychology of everyday contentment is based upon the elimination of certain attitudes and beliefs that predispose us towards emotional disturbance. Chief among these are the tendency to catastrophize about relatively small difficulties and frustrations, and to demand that things be different from the way they are. I teach a range of approaches to changing attitudes and beliefs in my coaching and counselling work". Jim Byrne, December 2005.
If you do live within commuting distance of Hebden Bridge or Halifax, which are about half-way between Leeds and Manchester, on the M62 motorway, and the trans-Pennine rail link, then please take a look at the Face-to-face Therapy page. I also offer an online Information Pack for individuals who want face-to-face counselling/therapy; or I can send you a copy if you email me. Among other things, the Information Pack contains details of my availability, locations and my sliding scale of fees.
I have written a few self-help books, and I also offer a range of books from ABC/Amazon.
I offer Distance Learning (or Home Study) courses in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT), at Primary Certificate level, Advanced Certificate level, and Diploma level, for professional counsellors/therapists. I offer supervision of REBT therapists for individuals with less than four years post qualifying experience, in accordance with the rules of the ISPC. And I offer occasional public seminars for members of the public; and face-to-face training events for both the public and professionals. See the Training in REBT page.
Details of my Public Lectures are also appended below. These events are intended for individuals who know little or nothing about REBT, and are general introductions to the topics indicated.

GROUP THERAPY - 2006
I am also offering one group therapy session per week, again commencing after Easter 2006, due to pressure of work. This will occur on:
Thursday afternoons, 2.00 - 4.00pm, in Hebden Bridge.
Cost: £10.00 when paid in advance. £12.00 on the door on the day. You can pay in advance by cheque or postal order to the address provided below; or by credit/debit card, or by PayPal account, at ClickBank's secure server, using the appropriate link below.
To join this group, you will need to be interviewed by Jim Byrne in a private, confidential meeting.
Commencing after Easter, and running most weeks, apart from the school and college holidays, these Group Therapy events will be highly participative group sessions, focusing on individual problems of emotion and behaviour. There will be a maximum of eight places in this group, so early booking is strongly recommended.
