 Let’s examine these benefits in more detail:

                                                            Time distortion

Spend time clockwatching at work? You’ve almost certainly been in situations where time seemed to be grinding to a halt or the clock’s hands seemed to be in slow motion. Remember that time in the restaurant where it seemed like an eternity passed before the meal arrived? And in a reverse way, have you ever experienced a time or an event that just seemed to go by in a flash? The phrase "time flies when you’re having fun" continues to be a popular phrase in our age.

Wouldn’t it be cool if you had control over time and the way you perceive it? Imagine being able to withdraw into a state that allowed you to be quite content whilst others around you became irritated at waiting for something. Also imagine being able to savour your most pleasurable experiences there and then instead of having to recall them because ‘it all went by in a blur’ at the time.

 

                                                           Sensory acuity

What is the purpose of life? This is too large a question to investigate here but one view held by Hawaiian Kahunas is that it is ‘to experience’. If we just accept this view for a moment then we would surely agree that in order to experience life at its fullest we need to sharpen our senses so that we can fully sense all our experiences.

Have you ever eaten a meal with your eyes shut? If not you can probably imagine what it would be like if your eyes were shut. I’d bet it wouldn’t be nearly as enjoyable as it would be with your eyes open. In the same way imagine if you were missing out on a lot in life because you weren’t open to all the sensory information available to you……

                                                     Emotional Freedom

Are you a slave to your emotions? Do you find yourself angry or sad for entire days? Are there certain past experiences of yours that cause you anger or hurt every time you reflect back on them? What if you could still remember those experiences and learn from them but crucially release the negative emotions attached to them?

 Improve your intuition

Ever had a hunch or a gut feeling about something? Ever know something was about to happen before it did? Ever guessed which elevator would open first? Ever sensed something was not quite right when you walked into a room but you couldn’t say exactly what that something was?

If you can relate to any of the above examples then you are like the overwhelming majority of the population who intuitively know things from time to time. How can this be you may ask. What allows people to guess things correctly before they’ve happened?

Well you’re no doubt aware that you’ve got a mind, yeah? That’s the part of you that’s probably saying, ‘yeah’ back to yourself just now. That’s your conscious mind, it’s the part of you that’s self aware. In 1956 the psychologist George Miller determined that consciously we can process 7 + 2 or – 2 bits of information per second (+2 on a good day, - 2 on a bad day). In layman’s terms that’s being able to pay attention to the tv, the kids in the back garden, the sauce in the pot on the hob, the dog barking, the sun streaming through the curtains etc all at the one time. Any more than 7 + 2 bits of information at any given time is likely to overload our conscious mind and we would simply not be able to take this in……consciously.

There is another part of our mind however……yes……….that’s right…..and you already know what that is don’t you? The unconscious mind.

Think about it. Do you consciously breathe in and out every second? Do you have to deliberately think about breathing for it for it to happen? When you’re walking do you have to say to yourself ‘one foot in front of the other’ etc? As you’re speaking do you say to yourself, ‘ok now I need an adjective followed by a noun followed by a conjunction’ etc? I’d guess probably not. That’s because you have an unconscious mind that goes on working in the background. It sustains and preserves your body, keeps blood pumping and air flowing etc. In addition it stores all your knowledge and memories. You simply couldn’t juggle all that information in your conscious mind.

The unconscious mind is reckoned to be able to process 2million bits of information per second. Whooa! Crazy, I know. So as you’re occupied with watching tv or playing golf etc your unconscious mind is keeping track of what age you are, what you’ve had to eat, how it’s digesting, where you are on the planet, what you’ve learned from that book you’ve been reading, what you’ve got to do in a month’s time, your concerns etc etc etc There’s just too many things that your unconscious is doing to be able to write enough examples.

If you tap into this part of your mind then you can gain access to the 2 million bits of information per second that your unconscious is processing because it’s this information that is used to give you a gut feeling or hunch about something. You may not know consciously what the specific information was but something that your unconscious picked up did ultimately provide the basis for your hunch.

Think of your conscious mind as the tip of an iceberg.  It's the part of your mind that's readily identified.  Your unconscious mind however is like the vast bottom of an iceberg that dwarfs the tip.  This is where all your knowledge is stored.

Another great analogy for the relationship between your two minds is the pilot/co-pilot analogy. Here your unconscious mind would be the co-pilot flying the plane whilst your conscious mind is the navigator setting the course and making all the key decisions. When the conscious mind wants to do something, it relies on the unconscious to provide all the necessary information and resources for that thing to happen, e.g. talking. If there’s a strong link between the two then your unconscious mind will provide you with all the resources you need in any given situation.

When we lose that rapport life can become quite difficult and stressful, e.g. we can become far too conscious of our words when we talk in front of a large audience and subsequently struggle to talk naturally. I like to think of the light switch circuit analogy. When an electric current flows the light can shine. If there is resistance in the circuitry then the light won’t shine properly. So ideally we want to create a good two-way communication between our two minds.

One way to access our unconscious mind is to become hypnotised into a deep somnambulistic state and access it that way. That’s not really practical in everyday life though is it? What’s a lot more useful is to have a technique that allows us to rapidly access our unconscious mind and all the resources it contains.

If you’ve got an important decision to make and you aren’t sure what to do you can use this technique, go into the state and let your unconscious mind decide for you. It’s an easy and less stressful way to make important decisions. Your unconscious mind can make the decision by weighing up all your values, beliefs, commitments etc without you having to mull over these consciously. Sound useful?

 

                                                               Relaxation

Can you keep your calm whilst others around you lose theirs? Do you get stressed at work and sometimes feel like hitting something or pulling your hair out? If this is you then you’re perfectly normal. Congratulations.

Would you like more flexibility in stressful or demanding situations though? If so then this technique is for you. Once you access the state you’ll become an oasis of calm to others around you who continue to pull their hair out. Being calm and attentive is a pre-requisite for many jobs. You may find yourself having greater job prospects once you master this state…

 

                                                           Life as an illusion
