Some personal experiences.

I always envied people who said they were able to fall asleep as soon as their heads touched the pillow. My situation was quite different. For years I found it  very difficult indeed to fall asleep.

The lack of sleep began to affect my health. Quite apart from moods of irritability and bad temper, I felt tired all the time, run-down; constantly drained of energy.

The doctors I consulted assured me there was nothing wrong with me physically. My symptoms, they all said, were due entirely to "sleep deprivation".

The cause of my insomnia, they assured me, was not physical but emotional. It was due to stress and an over-active mind.  

The doctors suggested that, for a short period, I should take sleeping pills at night.

They mentioned   'LUNESTRA" which they said was a very effective sleeping pill.

LUNESTRA - SIDE EFFECTS

I asked them about possible side-effects because I have a number of allergies.

They told me that while "Lunestra" was considered a very safe drug, it was impossible to rule out completely the risk of adverse reactions to any form of medication.

When I  asked them to be more specific about the possible side-effects I could suffer from taking  "Lunestra", they listed the following side effects that have been recorded:

 

  • Drowsiness

  • Dizziness

  • Lightheadedness

  • Serious dangers when taken with alcohol

  • Withdrawal symptoms when  discontinued

  • Abdominal and muscle cramps

  • Feelings of confusion

  • Changes in behavior patterns - increased aggression

  • Anxiety and agitation

Although these adverse reactions and side effects were uncommon, the Doctors felt it was their duty  to warn me about the possible danger and risk  of taking "Lunestra".   But all things considered, because of my long-standing insomnia, they considered it was worth  taking the risk.

What worried me, even more than the possible harmful effects to my health, was the danger of psychological dependence.   I felt that if I started taking a drug as potent and effective as  "Lunestra" it would become habit-forming. I would never be able to do without it.

I discussed the reasons for  my aversion to sleeping pills with the doctors, not only to "Lunestra" but to sleeping pills in general.  They were sympathetic but told me that in the circumstances all they could suggest  was a list of well-known, tried and tested, commonsense methods that often proved  effective.  They  would would make me feel more relaxed when I went to bed. 

I was given a list of general recommendations to help me sleep at night.

Unfortunately I found nothing new or original in this list.

There were no powerful techniques in this list, or specific methods to induce sleep; no effective remedies to treat or cure insomnia.

I have listed these  “remedies” for curing insomnia below. I tried them all.  They do offer sound, common-sense  advice - but nothing more!

They may work for some people. But they certainly didn’t help me cure my sleeping problems. 

Perhaps you may find the following suggestions more helpful than I did.  

1.  Don’t indulge in a heavy meal with a lot of alcohol before going to bed.

2.     Don’t drink tea, coffee or any substance with caffeine because it has a stimulating effect.

3.     Make sure that your bedroom is quiet, warm an airy.

4.     Avoid unnecessary sleep disturbing draughts.

5.     Make sure your bedroom is sufficiently darkened. Light from an outside source can often disturb you.

6.     If you are sensitive to noise do your best to change your sleeping conditions.

7.     Try a warm bath before going to bed to help you relax.

8.     Go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning.

9.     Even on week-ends when you don’t have to get up early , try and stick to your usual time schedule.

10.  Listen to  soothing music is before going to bed.

  11.  Don’t have short naps during the day.

  12.  Spend at least a half an hour in daylight during the day.                   

               13.  Have  a glass of warm milk before going to bed.

      14.  Make sure your bed is comfortable – not too hard or soft.

                16. Don’t watch an exciting movie before going to bed.     

 

I tried  all  these recommendations but didn’t  find them of much value.  I wanted a far more effective, dynamic approach to my sleep problems; methods that that would  actually “induce” sleep.

   I  wanted effective solutions that would cure my insomnia!

It  was clear to me that  I had two options.

As much as I disliked the idea, I  realized I might  be forced  to rely on sleeping pills.    Or I would have to devise  completely original, effective, and innovative techniques that would enable me to fall asleep as soon as I went to bed.    

What I needed were original methods; techniques  that would be as effective as  powerful sleeping pills …..but without any of  the disadvantages.

 I wanted a powerful, sleep-inducing system; one  that would enable me to fall asleep as soon as I my head touched the pillow.

An impractical, impossible idea?

The professional sleep therapists with whom I discussed the matter, certainly thought so!  They were very skeptical.  They politely told me  what I had in mind was unrealistic.

Nevertheless, in spite of their discouraging comments, I decided to go ahead with my plan to solve my insomnia  problems with  methods that were powerful, easy to follow, completely different and very effective.

An in-depth research of sleep.

My first step was to start with an in-depth study of every aspect  of   sleep. I wanted to understand more about:

·        The nature and function of sleep.

·        How much sleep a person really needed

·        Why some people needed more sleep than others.

·        Why some well-known personalities who suffered from severe insomnia were still able to live productive lives.

·        The causes of sleeplessness

·        The physical and psychological effects of sleep deprivation

·        The effect of stress on sleep.

My goal was to develop a  set  of  effective techniques that  could be relied upon to induce sleep every time they were used.

I began studying everything I could find on the subject of sleep and went to many different sources.  I read dozens of different books and scientific articles written by well-known authorities in the field of psychology and medicine.

Insomnia: A universal problem.

During the course of my research into sleep I was surprised to discover how many people suffer from insomnia in every part of the world. My sleep problems were certainly not unique.

It was  also interesting to learn how many famous people  suffered from insomnia: Political leaders, actors and actresses, well-known scientists and people who have achieved distinction  in many different fields.

It was obvious that insomnia was a universal problem.  No one is immune.

I  realized that in order to develop a  set of  techniques that would be as effective as I needed it to be, I would have to develop new,  original, innovative ideas.

Because I wanted the methods to work quickly – within minutes of going to bed –  the process  could not be lengthy and time-consuming.  The techniques  would have to be quick-acting. 

The techniques would have to be  condensed  into a comprehensive, fast, easy-to-follow, sleep management system.
