Inside The Cover Book Reviews
Review by Mridu Khullar
In a short and very informative book on writing fiction, Sue Carol
Nussbaum has covered it all. A concise, to-the-point book, Learn
the Elements of Fiction and Write your Novel does not contain
the fluff found in many other ebooks.
This book is aimed at the novice writer, someone whos writing
her first novel. For the more experienced writer, this book would
act as a reinforcement of the skills and tricks of the trade already
learnt, but for the newcomer, it contains all the advice required
to get that elusive first draft written.
The author particularly stresses how important the first draft
is. You can revise and edit later. The main job at hand is to get
the story written. And she shows exactly how this is done.
From the first chapter itself, the author jumps right in to the
techniques and methods of plotting and sub plotting. She talks about
finding a time period and a theme for the story before beginning
to write it. She then delves into organization, plots and subplots
and finding a story thats worth being told. She also discusses
the various techniques used in character generation, voice, structure,
tense and many of the intricacies of the whole writing process.
She does a very good job of keeping it simple and not over burdening
the novice writer with too many technicalities.
The authors tone is friendly and she gives clever and meaningful
advice along every step of the way. She gives examples from novels
that have been written mentioning the techniques used by the various
authors and how you can implement them in your own work.
At fifty pages, this ebook is jam-packed with a whole lot of information
that will have the beginning writer reach out to his pen and start
work on his novel. The authors inspiring and encouraging words
make this book an extremely informative read.
